Fantastic Fly Fishing!

Posted on May 15, 2022May 15, 2022

As a side trip while visiting Torrey, Utah, we hired a guide for a private fly fishing tour. Turns out that was a terrific decision!

Ryan picked us up at our RV campground and drove us about 40 minutes west and a bit north to one of his favorite fishing holes. I won’t even reveal the location other than to say it was near Fremont, Utah, and close to a beautiful waterfall. After outfitting us with waders and boots, we hiked down a bit of a canyon to a glorious stream.

Ryan was a fabulous teacher and extremely knowledgeable about Utah’s geology and of course fly fishing. He patiently showed us different types of casting based on the fishing hole’s location, as well as teaching us the best way to hook the fish. He cheered us on when we caught a trout with a resounding “Big fish! Big fish!”

My first success of the day with Skip ready to capture the moment!
Skip’s second or third catch – another tiger trout.
We stayed low on our knees so the fish were less likely to be spooked.
Our fabulous guide, Ryan

We caught mostly tiger trout, which are a cross of a brown and a brook trout. It was a blast! We had some real fighters, wildly jumping and thrashing about. Ryan was terrific at scooping them up in the net along the shore of the stream. We each caught about five fish. All were released back into the stream, so none made it to our dinner plate. Alas! Instead, dinner tonight was a burger and fries from a local food truck. The burger was fabulous and the fries were incredible.

Our next post will showcase Capitol Reef National Park. Though it is one of Utah’s mighty five, it is a less well known park which meant fewer tourists. We loved it! Can’t wait to share those pictures with you soon!

I can’t dare to hold a live fish. Seems exciting catching them and letting them go.
