Celebrating Glory in Big Bend!

Posted on April 10, 2023April 10, 2023

Celebrating Easter surrounded by God’s glorious creation was a gift. Oh what spectacular beauty we found in Big Bend, a massive 801,200 acre magnificent National Park gem! We also visited the nearby Big Bend Ranch State Park, another 300,000 expansive acres of desert and mountain vistas. We’ve enjoyed five days in this western Texas slice of heaven.

I’ll let the pictures below communicate more than any words could say. Enjoy!

Floating the Rio Grande

Gorgeous day for a canoe float.
Mexico on our right, United States on our left.
Enjoying a snack break on Mexican soil.

Ross Maxwell scenic drive to Santa Elena Canyon, then hiking into the canyon.

The Santa Elena Canyon behind us. Behind us on the left is Mexico. On the right is the United States.
Nature’s version of a border wall.
Breathtaking views from the Sotol scenic overlook.
Thankful for a fellow traveler willing to be our photographer.
We reached the end of the canyon hike. So worth the effort!

Hiking the Lost Mine Trail in the Chisos Basin in Big Bend.

We completed the Lost Mine 4.8 mile hike with 1,034 feet elevation gain. We never did see a lost mine. It was spectacular and the hardest hike we’ve conquered. What a thrill!
Wispy clouds dotted the crisp blue sky.
We rested a bit at the top. What a view!
Admiring the beauty filled our souls.

Incredible desert flowers!

Ocotillo bushes graced the desert landscape.
The flower of the ocotillo plant. So glad we were here when they were all blooming.
The ocotillo captivated me! Ocotillo means little torch in Spanish.

In Closing

Dinner at the famed Starlight Theater. The line was long, but the wait was worth it. The ambiance was delightfully western and the food was delicious!
We found the remains of a ranch fence and gate.
We hiked the state park on our last full day. The peace of the desert was divine.

Goodbye Big Bend. We’ve loved our visit. Now onto Caprock Canyon and Palo Duro Canyon. Hope you’ll come along for the ride!
