When I first began dreaming of an RV adventure trip out west two years ago, I was inspired by a post that described the Big Horn canyon. Stunning pictures got me to thinking. Now that dream has been realized.
We explored the Big Horn Canyon of Wyoming for three days. These canyons evidence the phenomenal power of wind and water over time, carving through seemingly impenetrable rock to create rivers and lakes. This national recreation area is a gem and far less crowded than most. We enjoyed hikes and a boat tour up the canyon. We were delighted to see big horn sheep dotting the canyon walls though they were difficult to spot; they were high up the walls and blended in incredibly well. The color of the water was green due to churn and algae. Nonetheless, the views were stunning with the sharp rising canyon walls.
We explored more of the canyon after our boat tour, including the Caroline Lockhart ranch. After a career of journalism, editing, and writing novels, she purchased a small ranch of 160 acres in the Big Horn canyon region at age fifty-five. She expanded considerably over time, amassing 6,034 acres, earning her the title of “Cattle Queen of Montana.” We saw some of the original ranch buildings. My favorite was a one room school house which was later used as a homestead cabin.
As a bonus, we did spot some big horn rams on the return to our campground. Only the mamas and three month old babies are in the canyon. The papas with the huge rounded horns are grazing elsewhere.
Our next stop will be Red Lodge, Montana. I remember skiing there in the sixth grade with my family. A summer experience in this charming town will be a treat. Hope you’ll come along for the ride!
